REST · GOLD DUST

A moonlit reflection · under one minute

Tonight, I belong to myself.

A Black woman rests beneath white linen beside a moonlit forest window, with two candles and an antique key on the sill.

Tonight, I am leaving something unfinished.

The moon has never needed my permission to disappear. I am trying to learn from her.

At the threshold, I imagine Hecate keeping a torch lit while I set my burdens down. There will be time to choose a road. For now, I close the gate.

The dishes can wait. The proving can wait. My body has been speaking softly all day; I am ready to listen.

For the Black woman everyone calls strong: may someone bring you water. May laughter find you before another obligation does. May you be loved with nothing to show for the day.

I loosen my shoulders. I let the night be larger than my worry.

Tomorrow can have my effort. Tonight, I belong to myself.
